Kim and Spencer discuss drawing on experts’ knowledge instead of trying to become an expert in all areas. They highlight the importance of self-guided learning and financial education, and the current trends in both. The hosts mention the ‘who, not how’ philosophy that involves leaning on expert advice rather than trying to become an expert in all areas.
Kim shares her experience with financial education, emphasizing the need to simplify complex financial topics for consumers. They discuss the societal obsession with retirement at age 65, which they view as harmful.

[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, welcome to the podcast. Today we’re going to be talking about creating our own education path. And Kim, this will relate to finances, but it’s also going to relate to your background. You’re a voracious reader, and you love to constantly learn. So we want to extract some things from you and share those with our audience today. Are you game for that? Absolutely. Okay, so first, let’s start in a couple of principles how you work. We discussed this in other episodes, which is you often rely on the who not how philosophy, which is you’re not trying to become an expert in all areas, and you will lean to those experts. So you’re finding the who’s to solve the problems. But
[00:54] many times you still have to become aware, you have to throw the antennas up and start to create that education. So give us a baseline, and then I’m going to pepper you with a few other questions. Oh, so fun. So I’m thinking back to the Busting the College Planning Lies book that Elizabeth Hagenlocker and I wrote, and how we talked in there about amazing different ways that you can get education that are not the typical two or four year college. And for example, even how valuable a two year degree is, and the many programs out there, CLEP, C-L-E-P is the one that is top of mind for me, that enable people to make great, great strides in getting the education that they want on their own terms. Yet what needs
[01:43] to come right alongside that is the financial education that is being talked about in the marketplace heavily these days. But I find it odd to look at the content of that education. And I know that when I look back to my own financial education, my mom was a kindergarten teacher. She taught two classes of kindergarten every single day for over 30 years. I can’t even fathom doing that. And I believe it is because of her that I have a skill, which I’m grateful to Father, Mother, God for in explaining things simply, because finances are often talked about as complex and confusing and people want to use big words and they really don’t want the consumer to know what’s going on behind the curtain.
[02:42] So I feel like I’ve built my financial education that’s out there in the form of books and podcasts and YouTube channel, of course, and our blog posts, where we pull the curtain back. We unveil what is going on behind the scenes and use simple language to do it so that anybody, whether you’re in your early 20s and just becoming aware of financial education and feeling like you need some for yourself, or you’re in your 50s and feel like you missed out on it, you have a place to turn to where you can get unbiased education with clarity around the various products that people buy and strategies that people do. That’s an important distinction right there. Just those two things, products that people buy and
[03:34] then strategies, things that people do with those products in order to have your money be more in control and you clearer about what it’s doing and how it’s going. Oh, I dig that. You’ve mentioned one thing in there that kind of slapped me in the face. I’m going to say. You mentioned that there are some people that feel like maybe they’re too old and they didn’t have the opportunity or things pass them by. That’s not something that I often think about. I would say maybe it’s due to my age or the environment I’m around. But what is it that you’ve heard people say that? Why are they saying that and what is your rebuttal to it? Well, I think our society has gotten so unfortunately stuck on age 65 as having any meaning. And as most people know, it has a
[04:35] word associated with it called retirement that is just flat out the most detrimental, dangerous word and concept that I can think of in the financial realm because it is so amazing when you look at the math of what human longevity has done to age 65. And Todd Langford of Truth Concepts has looked at that math and it’s 87. Well, unfortunately, because our society doesn’t know that people in their 50s and 60s get super scared that, oh my gosh, I only have a certain number of years left to go. Well, frankly, somebody that’s in their 50s and 60s should be working another 30 years. And if they will add that lens to their landscape, they will stop being so stressed about, quote, not having enough for retirement.
[05:27] Furthermore, they will see, as you see, the value of taking time off today and going on a trip or having some free days that are in shorter time frames so that they have the energy both mentally and physically to work again and again and again. And maybe it’s not in the same way. Maybe it’s not full time. Maybe it’s not the same career. Nevertheless, when you have a lens of, oh my gosh, I’m in my 50s or whatever, and I’m going to be working another 30 to 40 years, it just changes the perception of everything that’s going on in your life. It changes how you deal with your body, how you look at money, how you look at work in general. And it’s so much, frankly, healthier and better and more sustainable and more true to you as an individual. Because if you’re going to work for
[06:26] another 30 years, you darn well better find some work you love. Absolutely. And there is no one out there, at least we are not saying, that you can’t reinvent yourself today. And today, like right now, today and one day, and right now, today, no matter where you are in age, there’s a brand out there growing Boulder B-O-L-D-E-R. You see reinvention of people in their 80s and 90s in their content literally every single day. Turn to that for inspiration if you don’t have any other place to give you some guidance on how to do that, no matter your age. I love that. So do you mind if I share two quick stories with you around this? Okay, good. So the first one came from yesterday. I FaceTimed my old neighbor.
[07:21] He’s one of my favorite people. It was his 78th birthday. My neighbor, Mike. I love the guy. And he was in his wood shop. We’re FaceTiming. And he goes, hey, look at this new toy that I got. He takes the phone and he shows me that he’s got a CNC machine now. And I go, that’s cool. I said, so are you using it? He goes, well, duh, I wouldn’t buy it if I wasn’t using it. And I said, well, did you learn how to code and piece things together? He goes, well, yeah, that’s a part of it. At 78 years old, he’s teaching himself to run a CNC machine. And then he shows me the cool little things that he made for his granddaughter. And I mean, that’s amazing. So take that 78 year old Mike. Now we’re going to go
[08:12] to my son, Michael, 15 year old Michael. A part of his education is homeschool. And he’s learned how to write a book using the help of AI, how to create the artwork. And as he went through the process, he told a couple of friends and he decided to create a course teaching them. So he’s got a course called homeschoolauthor.com and it teaches all about that. The reason I mentioned that is because he’s now created a little group of people that he’s taught. And now there’s a little, call it a little group of people that are excited. So what you’re talking about here in creating financial education is one, getting information to it’s doing three, it’s the group, the community around you. So my question
[09:01] for you, Kim is what communities around you have maybe you created or that you’re familiar with for helping people with financial education and creating their education. Well, how interesting that you should ask because I long time friend and business partner, Patrick Donahoe, who many people on our pad cast are familiar with. You may listen to the prosperity podcast. You also may listen to the wealth standard podcast, which is Patrick Donahoe’s podcast. So he and my husband, Todd Langford and myself have been looking at creating a client oriented event. We have all done years and years and years of teaching advisors, and we feel like it’s time to create a client event where clients can learn a lot of these behind the scenes things that we know. And that’s going to be
[09:59] in May. So there will be some more information forthcoming. It will be by invitation only to people that listen to our podcast and are on our email list. And then it will be very interesting to see what we do in the space of community. Now, I should also say that we have our prosperity pledge membership, but even within that, I don’t have a community belt. And so here’s my request, if I may, to our podcast listeners. And that is to take a little bit of a vote and help me know what type of community, if any, you would be seeking. So as an example, I have attended strategic coach for almost 30 years or maybe just a little over 30 years. And I love that entrepreneurial community. It’s very valuable to me. Yet
[10:52] I’m a bit of an introvert, have thoroughly enjoyed attending on zoom and get a lot out of the coaching program without attending the event. Personal finance is incredibly personal. And so I find that people are hesitant to want to join any type of group that gets their personal finance involved. Nevertheless, we all know that everything, including cash flow, starts in our thinking. And so really the question is, would a group around the mindset of prosperity as it relates to your personal finances be valuable to you? So I would love to create and let’s hold. So just put the thought in your head and then Spencer, you and I, let’s create a better way to collect the votes. Cause we don’t want it. Just a whole bunch of emails coming in. Yes or no. We’re going to create, we’re going
[11:52] to create on the fly here. We’re going to next podcast episode. We’re going to have a link where people can vote and we’ll get some clarity around what type of group we might create. Will that work? I love it. That is awesome. I had no idea. I just knew that in order for people to make change and to learn fast, there has to be some type of accountability piece to it and some type of collective group. And once you’ve done that, we just accelerate it. So Kim, I love it. By the next episode, we’ll have something. And for all of you listeners, if you are just dying to find out what that is, you can send an email to hello at prosperity thinkers.com. Send a message. Stay tuned for the next episode.
