Recently, I wrote a letter to my newborn granddaughter. The letter wasn’t about school or career choices. It wasn’t even about money in the typical sense.
I wrote to explain why I bought a Whole Life insurance policy for her.
To many people, that might sound unusual. After all, it’s typical to think that life insurance is something you only buy once you’re an adult with a mortgage, a spouse, or children depending on you. Yet from a Prosperity Economics perspective, that’s actually one of the latest times you could start.
Why I Bought My Grandchild Life Insurance
One of the greatest financial gifts you can give a child or grandchild is not a toy, a check, or even a college fund. It’s time.
When a properly designed Whole Life policy starts early in life, time becomes an extraordinary ally. The guarantees have years to compound. Dividends have years to accumulate. Cash value grows into a flexible pool of opportunity capital. And the death benefit creates a permanent financial foundation that can support not only the child, but also potentially their family for generations.
In other words, a whole life insurance policy for your grandchild becomes more than insurance. It becomes a financial head start.
Over the years, I’ve seen many young families struggle to build financial stability from scratch in adulthood. Debt, rising expenses, and the pressure to save and invest all at the same time can make the process feel overwhelming.
Yet when a child begins life with a foundational asset already in place, the trajectory changes. They have access to capital. They have flexibility. They have a tool that can support opportunities instead of forcing difficult trade-offs.
And perhaps just as important, they have a living example of long-term thinking.
That’s why I wrote the following letter. It explains the intention behind the policy, how it works, and why I hope my grandchild keeps it for her entire life.
My hope is that as you read it, you’ll see that life insurance for children and grandchildren isn’t really about insurance at all.
It’s about planting a financial seed today that can support an entire lifetime tomorrow.
Here’s the letter I wrote:
A Letter to My Grandchild
My Dear [Grandchild’s Name],
If you’re reading this, it means I’ve done something very purposeful for you.
This Whole Life policy is more than a financial tool. It’s a seed. And like any seed, it only becomes strong and fruitful if it’s allowed to grow over time — and if it gets watered over time.
I didn’t put this in place for you because I was worried about you. I put it in place because I believe in you. I believe in your future, your dreams, your family, and your ability to steward what you’re given.
Please, my sweet grandchild, keep this policy for your whole life.
I know there may be seasons when someone tells you to cancel it. They may say you can “do better” somewhere else. They may focus only on rates of return or compare it to investments. But this policy was never meant to compete with Wall Street. It was designed to be your foundation — your safe, steady, always-there asset.
Whole Life insurance grows in two powerful ways:
First, the cash value grows steadily and predictably over time.
Second, the death benefit grows as well — and that growth matters more than most people realize.
There may come a time when you need or want money. An emergency. A business idea. A home. A chance to help someone you love. When that happens, I don’t want you to feel trapped or forced to liquidate investments at the wrong time. Instead, you can borrow against this policy’s cash value.
Borrowing against it does not mean destroying it.
When you borrow wisely, your full cash value continues earning as though you hadn’t touched it. You’re simply using the policy as collateral — just like a bank uses deposits. You can repay on your own schedule. And if life throws you a curveball, the policy is designed to be flexible.
Please don’t surrender it just to “get the money out.” That would be like cutting down an orchard for one basket of fruit.
In time, you’ll learn that both aspects of it are important and will benefit you while you are living. Cash Value in your younger years, and Death Benefit in your later years, both of which are growing all the time.
That death benefit can become a source of permission — permission to spend other assets, permission to enjoy, permission to live generously. When you know there is a substantial, tax-advantaged legacy already in place, it changes how you view your later years. You don’t have to hoard. You don’t have to fear running out. You can use your assets more confidently because this foundation stands strong beneath you.
This policy is not just protection for the end of life. It is support for the entire journey.
It is patience.
It is discipline.
It is stability.
It is a quiet partner in your financial life.
I hope you add to it. I encourage you to build around it, and possibly buy more. And I trust it will become a part of your family’s story for generations.
Mostly, I know that when you look at it, you will remember that your grandma believed in long-term thinking, steady growth, and leaving things even better than we found them.
With all my love and confidence in you,
Grandma

Write Your Own Legacy Letter
When we place life insurance policies for our clients, we usually provide a few extra little goodies. It’s our way of loving on our clients, who mean the world to us. As I wrote this letter to my granddaughter, I realized how special it would be for other families and people starting their generational wealth journey. That’s why we’ve decided to include this in future policies for you to share if you buy life insurance for the little ones you love.
That being said, there’s no replacement for the loving words YOU have to share with the kids, grandkids, and others in your life. Our hope is that this can inspire you to write your own legacy letters to the ones you love, ESPECIALLY if it’s a note about stewarding wealth for the next generations.
Whether you’d like to use our letter, write your own, or something in between, know that the Prosperity Thinkers team is here to support you through the process of buying whole life insurance (and stewarding it after the fact).
