In this episode of the Prosperity Podcast, the hosts discuss the practice of year-end reflection and goal setting. Rather than strictly adhering to the January 1st New Year timeline, they advocate for personalized reflective dates, such as birthdays or anniversaries. The hosts stress the importance of turning the process of goal-setting into a collective family activity and the significance of handwriting responses due to its brain engagement.

[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, welcome to the podcast. We’re going to be talking about the year review and vision setting. Now that doesn’t mean it has to happen on January 1st. I’ve seen people do this at their birth date. I’ve seen them do it at an anniversary date. There’s something else that you do, Kim. You actually celebrate and do thinking around policy anniversaries, correct? Yes, absolutely. A policy anniversary date is like a fiscal year end in a corporation, and it’s a great time to take a look at things. Of course, when you have a policy anniversary date in every month of the year, like we do, I’m not sure all 12, but I know we have 10 or 11 of the months, then you
[00:52] get to just pick your own date. Isn’t that cool? It’s kind of a fresh start all the time. This particular episode actually comes from ex-former Twitter. It comes from Clint Fiore. He’s a person that I’ve chatted with on there. He’s in the business brokering, business buying space. What I really liked about this and why I wanted to pull this in for today, because it’s talking about the year end review. What he did specifically is he said, I typed these questions out on my phone, and then he printed them out, took the family to dinner, and he gave each family member a hard copy and said, right. And then we’ll discuss. There’s something special about that, right? Oh, gosh, we’ve got some similar guidance in our perpetual wealth book because it is
[01:49] so valuable and strategic coach really taught me this to take the time as a group to sit and write. It’s amazing what good you can come up with literally in three minutes in six minutes. You know, if you have a sheet of paper like that, I always recommend doing sprints like take the first question. Let’s have two minutes go and everybody just writes our answer. And then the next question, you know, or maybe it’s three minutes or maybe you do take, OK, let’s take ten minutes. But all of the family just sitting there together in silence, thinking and writing. There’s something very meaningful about that. It’s remarkable. Yes. And the actual physical handwriting, it’s a different wiring of the brain.
[02:44] I’m going to go over a couple of those questions. I would love to hear some of your questions, see what you agree on and what you might adjust. So the first one is, what are you most proud of yourself for this year? Kim, kind of question you’d be asking as well. Well, you know, I have a little bit of a hang up with the word pride, because as we all know, it can be both a positive and a negative. I might choose a word like confident. What are you most confident about this year? What are you most pleased with? I mean, in the end, does it matter? Probably not. It’s going to get the same type of information on the piece of paper. Yet I love the beginning of a quick look back and the progress that you have made.
[03:39] Absolutely. The next question is, what was one of your favorite memories of 2023? And I like that because now it’s creating an anchor point for family members, be it young or old. For you, is that something that resonates? It is. Love that. Identify a favorite memory. It’s so easy for those to slip by if we don’t really take a moment to be grateful for them and document them, even if it’s just a sentence or two. And then again, this is that same idea of taking a moment to look back and identify the good before you try to look forward and do any visionary. Absolutely. This next one is something that we have spoken about before our listeners will know about this, which is what habit have you gotten better at this
[04:35] year that’s improving your life? Ooh, fabulous question. And note the use of the word habit, because we have talked about how valuable habits are and how imperative it is that we pick the good ones and really focus on those. And when we do that, it enables the bad ones to just kind of fall off the table. I think too often people are looking at their bad habits and saying, I don’t want to fill in the blank, smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, have sugar, watch TV every night, whatever the bad habits are. And yet if we’ll just focus on the good ones and expand the good ones, we’ll get such better results than if we’re focused on trying to get rid of the bad ones. Yeah, absolutely. You know, it reminds me of a recent conversation with our kids and we were
[05:34] talking about the new habits to develop. And it really comes down when you’re saying, oh, I want to stop doing X, Y, Z, you know, watching TV every night, whatever that would be, or, you know, sugar. You have to replace it with something you can’t just remove. There has to be something else that goes there. How are you doing that when let’s tie in finances and let’s tie in the goals? So, you know, if a person’s saying, oh, I want to start saving money, that’s OK. I get that because you haven’t been saving. But maybe the other one is like, oh, I want to stop putting money into a plan that’s not going to be within my control or whatever that looks like. How does that work for you? Are you approaching it?
[06:27] Well, it’s such a great question. I have to first share a funny story about sugar and vegetables because for years I have made the effort to write down on, you know, first it was pocket coach from strategic coach. Now I have my own visionary platform that I use, but I have made the effort to write down more vegetables instead of writing down less sugar, even though that is exactly what my effort is, is to replace the sugar with the vegetables and is that happening all the time? No. And yet I find that just that conscious, I usually look at it two or three times a year, just that conscious reinforcement of more vegetables, more vegetables, more vegetables helps. And it’s so important. And when we apply it to monetary things, it’s the same idea of
[07:24] focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. So instead of I want to pay off debt or I want to, I’m trying to think of an example for wealthier families. We’ve got a dentist that has 11 different operations in, I think he lives in Alabama and he is. In a good cashflow position. And so his goal has been more around learning about aspects of money. So rather than being focused on what he wants to get rid of or something easy, like I want to save more. I mean, who wouldn’t even wealthy people should be saving and saving more because they’re going to live long and they’re going to have inflation. So rather than being vague in his vision, he is identifying things that he wants to learn about the money that he wants to save.
[08:19] So for a lot of people, I think the easiest thing to do is to bring in the why. So again, let’s not have the payoff debt as a goal. Let’s instead have the save more as a goal, but let’s add the why. So in this gentleman’s case, his why is because he wanted to learn about investments that required a quarter million dollar minimum, because there’s a certain game that gets played when that’s the case. And so that’s going to drive him to save more in order to do those investments because he has a why attached to it that’s learning, expanding, improving, it’s inspirational, it’s aspirational, all of those things. And anybody can do that. Just add the why word, or you could even add the, so that word,
[09:17] I want to save more, so that, or you could even add in order to, I want to save more in order to take my family on a nicer vacation or fill in the blank, but it’s that connection of the emotion to the monetary goal or even the monetary vision goal specific vision is not, but still valuable that is so validly important. Ooh, I really like that. I like the why because now you, oh, we’ll put it this way. When we start the year, we’ve all had that where we’re clear and then months go by and maybe we had too many goals or we didn’t have enough focus or we didn’t have enough of momentum towards that. And then we can look back at that list and say, I didn’t even realize that was a goal or something I wanted to work on this year.
[10:12] But when you have a why, that’s a story you can carry with you about what you’re doing. Love it. So I’m going to ask a couple or share a couple more of the questions that they did in their family goal review and your planning, which is what’s a habit or area of life you want to focus on making improvements next year. So we did what worked, now we’re doing what works. How did you approach that? Yeah, that’s a great distinction. Dan Sullivan taught me a long time ago to use the two questions, what works and what doesn’t work. But I love, I don’t know whether this was the author or you bringing in what worked as in, in the past and what’s works or what’s working for the future. So that, and again, the habit word of course brought in.
[11:08] So that is delightful. So I’ll share one of my personal things that I am working on elevating even more this year, because I always work on elevating this and it’s my spiritual study time. So whether it’s a inspirational book that you enjoy reading, whether it’s the Bible, whether it’s a Bible study class, which online now there’s endless things, whether it’s a meditation tool, whether it’s some kind of prayer process that you want to increase your time at this world needs that. And your family can benefit from that. And so whatever that space is for you, whatever term you want to apply to it, I would really encourage that to be on the list for the next year for you. Kim, I don’t know how you did it.
[12:04] I didn’t share this with you before because I didn’t want to have any cheat sheets, literally the next question on the list was, how have you grown spiritually this year? I love it. So such an awesome question. And isn’t it cool that in today’s world, it is okay to use that term and everybody knows that they have to interpret it for themselves. And so that is a delightful question. And so cool because frankly, children, who knows what ages this guy’s kids were, but children really identify with spiritual learning, spiritual growth, spiritual ideas. In fact, as we know, sometimes they are better at it than we are. Yes, they are very helpful. Kim, you know, for our listeners, as we see what’s happening, what’s
[13:02] going on, this is a year, a time that all of us need to be very intentional, the spiritual component, the habits component, the awareness, there’s so many to it. The visioneering, the connecting the why. Thank you for sharing these things. For all of you listeners, we’ll make sure to put a link to this post so you can see some of those questions and then to dig even deeper as you’re listening to this again, if this happens in December, January or happens in May, it doesn’t matter.
