[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, on this episode, we’re gonna be talking about the personal annual review. And this comes from Sahil Bloom. Sahil is a successful business, I’ll call a business leader, a thought leader, writes a lot of words of wisdom. And he puts together a handful of questions that we’re gonna talk about on the podcast today. Kim, you sent this to me and it was so impactful that we needed to make this a part of the episode. So are you ready for question one? I am, and I want you to know that though I did briefly read them, I purposely did not think about them so that for our podcast listeners, this is an unrehearsed, not that any of them aren’t, they all are unrehearsed.
[00:53] Don’t use double negatives, Kim. Nevertheless, this is raw and real and I’m answering on the fly and sometimes I might not have an answer. So let’s see how it goes. Okay, perfect, okay. And for all of you listeners, we’ll put a link to this so that you can have access to these. But we’re gonna jump in question one, which is what did I change my mind on this year? What did I change my mind on? So that means, because I change my mind often, I’m a 4492 Colby and the nine indicates something called quick start, which basically means that I change my mind often all the time. And so I’m looking for something deeper. Like what’s a big thing that I might’ve changed my mind on? And I’m gonna have to keep talking about this
[01:47] for a minute because a lot of things have not changed. One of my favorite questions that a long time client asked me, probably five or six years ago, she’s probably been working with us for 25 years, is what has changed as it relates to what you’re recommending financially? And I was able to answer to her very little because the bulk of what we do is so, so centuries old. And it was very nice to be able to say that. There’s definitely some exceptions, but I’m gonna have to put a pin in that. I want something deeper and I can’t find one. There just isn’t lots of little things, but not a big one. We’ll pull it out. We’ll go to question number two because we’re gonna pull it out. All right, what created energy this year?
[02:37] Now that’s fun. So our Busting the Scarcity Mindset book that came out really early in the year was super fun. Probably should have been book number one as opposed to book number 11. But if I had written it 25 years ago, whenever I first started writing books, I wouldn’t have had a lifetime of experience to contribute to it. And so we did a special book launch, courtesy of Amber Wilhauer of the No Guts, No Glory Enterprises Company. We had some really good help in that book launch, which was guided by her, which I’m super grateful for. And I love having a book out there that’s specifically about mindset. The co-author, Kristen Huygens, was a fabulous person to help us with. Her company’s called Joyful Communications.
[03:30] So holy cow, I think the bottom line of what created energy this past year is not only the book specifically, but the acknowledgement of teams, T-E-A-M-S, because look at all the people I just rattled off. I mean, and that’s not even my own team, Rae-Ann, Teresa, David, you, et cetera. Debbie, Elizabeth, everybody that helps us get done. Gabe, Carrie, some of these people, our clients, our listeners don’t even know because they’re completely behind the scenes. So that’s what creates energy. Ooh, okay. I’m not gonna spoil it, but if you don’t have an answer to number one, I have one for you. But we’re gonna go to number three first. Oh, I can’t wait, okay. So I’ve got it, because I’ve been analyzing and thinking,
[04:18] so here we go. I’m so grateful. Three, which is what drained energy this year? So we definitely have some systems that we are having to overhaul, and I do not like systems work. So back to my 4492 Colby, my follow through, which is the second four, is a four. And it means that I just won’t be overly involved in systems. But as the owner of the company, I have to be somewhat involved. And even though the team’s doing a lot of the work, we’re actually in the throes of it right now, but we’ve been fussing with it all year long. The biggest part is shifting our database from one provider to another. And it’s a nightmare. It’s just, and it will increase our capability and save money. And so it’s certainly worthwhile,
[05:08] but holy cow, is that an energy drainer. Now I do have a fun quote as well. And that is that complainers are energy drainers. So I want to be very clear that I answered your question because you asked me a question, and I am not complaining. I’m very excited about the new CRM, customer resource manager, relationship manager, whatever you want to call the R. And it’s good work that it will be doing for us next year. Ooh, I like it. The framework that I’ve tried to work from, and actually I’ve learned part of this from you as well, which is you can address something that’s bad. Like you’re not playing Pollyanna, but you better come up with a solution to it. Like there’s no room to sit and just complain.
[05:59] Come up with a solution and the solution may change. And especially you being a high quick start, like what you think is the solution right now in five minutes, maybe something different, but that’s okay. Okay. Question four, what were the boat anchors in my life? Interesting. So boat anchors to me implies something that holds us back. So we could maybe even state them as negative boat anchors. Is that the question? Yeah, there’s three examples. Do you want me to give those to set the context? Okay. So examples are people who laugh at your ambition, self-limiting beliefs, stories, and mindsets, or bad habits that cut into your growth. Awesome. Okay. So I’ve worked with habits forever. I feel like my habits are really good,
[06:47] not overly affected by people’s opinions of things. So I’m gonna pick that middle one, which is self-limiting beliefs. And oh my gosh, they’re prevalent all the time. I mean, it’s a daily thing, maybe six days a week at least, having to overcome self-limiting beliefs, especially if you’re in growth mode, which as already stated, you’re either in grow mode or die mode, and I choose the former. So the real, if I had to identify one or two for the year, I think the real struggle that I’ve had in the self-limiting belief department is impact. And in fact, Todd’s newsletter is called Ideas for Impact. And I want to be making a bigger impact. And sometimes that devil on your shoulder or whatever you want to call the source
[07:41] of the self-limiting beliefs is just saying, no, your audience isn’t large enough or you can’t reach a wide enough one. And this is true for both me and Todd in the work that he’s doing as well with Inside His Truth Concepts community. So that’s the boat anchor that definitely slows down or limits the progress that I want to be making every single year. Insightful. Okay, question five. What did I not do because of fear? What did I not do because of fear? Well, there’s an AI project that I’m really interested in. And I got involved in the AI space early on, which is fairly common. Initiating quick starts are definitely early adopters. And we spent a lot of money on this project and then had to shelve it.
[08:38] And it’s super frustrating. And the time is probably ripe again, but I’m afraid. And so I still haven’t pulled the trigger and I have the who’s, I know who can help us work on this project, but it’s a scary thing to invest in something that you’ve already invested in that failed and now to pursue it again. So right now as we record this in the middle of December, it’s still a no for 2025. Okay. Question six. What were my greatest hits and worst misses? Ooh, okay. Greatest hits, I’m gonna go with personal. And that is that we had just my side of the family in our home over the Thanksgiving week for Thanksgiving, for all the good things that happened with that. And we haven’t had just that focus
[09:39] because typically when my two adult children come in, Todd’s two come also and often my sister and their cousins come. And so it’s a much bigger group and this time it was a little smaller group. And it was just such a treat to see my two adult children who I think are rock stars in life. Just how they live their lives, they’re both married. One of them has children, one of them is expecting how they handle their money, how they handle the discipline of their children, my grandchildren, how they live their lives, how they run through the obstacles, how they deal with each other as two adult siblings, how they deal with their spouses and the relationships that they’re building with their spouses.
[10:24] I mean, I could just go on and on and that was just a huge hit. And it was super fun because Todd’s kids got to join in the latter part and some of their cousins and so we got the best of all worlds there which is just fabulous. I’m so, so grateful that happened. Worst misses, there’s a challenge that is occurring and I’m dealing with it and it’s from some past decisions. And so onward we go, deal with it and push forward. Oh, you know what you said and we have to take it. We’re not going into it, but you got to take this because this is important. You didn’t say, forget about it. You said, deal with it, which means there is the appropriate time and attention. And I think what happens with hyperproductive people
[11:10] is that they forget that there’s nothing wrong with saying this is important, but it’s not something that I have to do right now and disrupt my life. There will be time and space for it. That’s really very intentional, that’s cool. Okay, seven, what did I learn this year? Oh gosh, a whole long list, including a lot of what you just said. I think I’m gonna call it compartmentalize the ability to compartmentalize, it’s a tough word, mental space and focus because from our five strengths, so like the Clift finders, five strengths finders, whatever that’s called, I find that self-knowledge incredibly valuable along with Colby and one that both me and my husband Todd have, which I’m grateful for,
[12:03] is focus and we can really dial in and focus. And so because of that, I learned about opportunities and took advantage of those opportunities and focused on them and let them grow and develop and create more good and that kind of thing. I’m always learning stuff around the proof of personal financial numerical math, right? So I’m very conceptual person. I have been doing what I’ve been doing for a long time. I absolutely know the concepts of some things and the conceptual framework for some things. Nevertheless, Todd and I did a class for a deep dive into his kitchen sink calculator called Asset Flow and it’s just amazing to continue to see the numerical proof, the mathematical proof of some of the concepts that I’ve literally
[13:01] been talking about for 30 years. So that was a fun learnings, one of many learnings and learnings is a real word and I could probably go on in that department for quite a while, but I’ll stop there. Ooh, that’s good. We’re gonna go to question one, but there’s one thing in seven that you mentioned, which is super cool. There was zero hesitation in what you learned this year. That shows growth. That’s cool. Now, imagine if you would have sat there and scratched your head and said, hold on, pause this episode for a little bit. Let me come up with something. Not the case. So that’s really cool. And I think that’s an indicator of any of our listeners and depending on the type of personality, you’ve probably seen this as well
[13:45] as you’ve coached many people. There are people that have a lot of growth and interests in a variety of subjects and then there’s others that maybe it’s not as many, but it’s the depth. Can you explain the difference between those two, how you’ve been able to help people gauge that? Yeah, it’s an interesting space because depth is along the lines of, I think it’s Malcolm Gladwell that talked about the 10,000 hours and the level of genius that comes with depth. And it’s something that just flat out requires the time and life experience. You can only read and study and have the learning so much. Nevertheless, I think it’s also very important to have some breadth because when we do, then we can apply the right analogy.
[14:36] We can tell the right story. We can make a link or a connection between something that might be of our depth into somebody else’s breadth that doesn’t have the depth that we have. And so I’m not sure if I’m answering your question clearly, but I really think both are very valuable. Absolutely. And I think both as you’ve coached people through, it weaves its course. I mean, you have to touch a lot of different things and then find areas, as you mentioned on like going through the kitchen sink calculator, there’s depth there, but you had to get to that depth. So back to question one, what did I change my mind on this year? Here’s my answer for you. And this is just as an observation. This was the first year
[15:23] as in question two, you mentioned teams. So you were talking and sharing gratitude of the people. This was the first year that I’ve seen you bring your inside world to the outside, meaning you shared pictures of special get-togethers with the family. You shared more stories about Pepper. You’ve gone through and you’ve brought your inside world to the outside. That’s difficult. There’s a lot of vulnerability there. And it means that you had to change your mind in order to do that. And that’s my observation of what’s happened for you this year. Awesome, very insightful. Thank you so much for sharing that and bailing me out of missing question number one of all questions. So yes, noted. And you are correct.
[16:18] Well, good. For all of you listeners, again, this will be inside of the show notes. You can take a look at it. There are additional questions that you’ll want to go through that aren’t on here. And maybe some of those questions are like, hey, what can we do to strengthen our family this year? Or strengthen the mindset, strengthen the finances, all of those types of things. In order to have clarity on some of those more complicated questions, like strengthening the finances or the legacy, you often need someone that has the experience. Send an email to helloatprosperitythinkers.com, special email for all of you listeners, so that you can get some of that depth. So Kim, I just wanted to throw that out there
[17:05] because that’s an area of expertise where you’re able to adapt, meaning you’ve taken the time to go wide and you’ve taken the time to go deep to be able to help people there.
