[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, we’re going to be talking about high living costs versus high living. And this is an article I had read about the Amish. So Kim, in your words, what’s the difference between high living and high living costs? Oh, such a great question. I can’t wait to hear how the Amish define the high living. So to me, it’s all about your values. And so for example, do you value a trip to Europe so much that you’re willing to give up some other things, fill in the blank, more clothes, more Starbucks, you name it, so that you can do a trip to Europe maybe every single year? Or do you value so much the good spiritual mental time that you get from your fill
[00:53] in the blank, Starbucks habit, you know, nice dinner out every Friday night that’s a date night, whatever it is, define high living for yourself. And consequently, it’s all relative as it relates to your income. And it doesn’t always have to be monetary. I’m thinking about an upcoming date night that I know Todd and I are going to have and we know the weather is going to be really bad. And so it will be a completely inexpensive at home, wonderful time because we made it purposeful. We said that this is what we’re going to do. We set aside, it might only be a half an hour, but it’s a special time. It’s a precious time. That is high living. And you can do that at whatever level of the game you’re playing financially.
[01:44] Something that I actually like about my practice is the clients that I help literally from 18 year olds that have earned their first dollar, you know, and their income is $2,000 a year or whatever it is, basically summer jobs, right? All the way to entrepreneurs that are in the, you know, maybe five to 10 million dollar range. I’ve got a few that are bigger than that, but that’s my space. That’s a really big space. There is a lot of variety. I literally have people earning 10,000 a year and people earning well over a million a year. So great. It enables me to see a whole bunch of different financial spaces. And what I see is that those that save first again, no matter the level of the income live purposefully with their values intact, which takes a
[02:40] little bit of time. It takes some experimentation, right? Then there are so much happier and they truly can say I am living my best life. I am living the high life because that is defined by each person and by that person’s and that family’s values, which again, take some experimentation, right? If you’re newly married and you know, whether you dated a long time or not, you have to kind of figure out. Well, we’ve got probably two different sets of values. How can we bring those values together? So that we can spend our money accordingly, you know, you must you had to have cheated you had to have read the article before because they talk about values like you nailed it. No idea. I my reading out in the World Wide Web is very limited.
[03:32] So I love that you found this. I can’t wait to hear about it. What’s what’s so interesting is this is that it’s principled based. So the scenario that they were talking about was the dynamic of the United States how it had been a one-income household and then it has shifted to a two-income household and now we live in a world where it can be a two-income and that two-income could be both people working at home or who knows what it is. It doesn’t right now. It’s it’s so fluid that it’s different or a three-income household even though there’s only two people totally could be there. Exactly. Then and it’s be what they’re talking about is they’re talking about the high cost of living and they they use the examples of your
[04:20] mentioning which is people have been unintentional not purposeful. They’re letting the world push them around and it doesn’t mean that we have to go back to the Amish living. We have to go back to the values and so help us wrap in some of the values of prosperity thinkers. Well, it’s so fun to do this because it is so individual and it changes which is great that way. You don’t have to feel stuck. You don’t have to feel like oh my gosh, I messed this up. I mean I can remember a time when cash flow was super tight and I was in a partnership and some of the people in the partnership we’re all doing fine personally, but the business was struggling. And they sent me some flowers which is like such a gift, right?
[05:11] That’s so nice and thoughtful and I kind of embarrassingly flew off the handle about it because I didn’t want the money spent right and I look back at that. I mean it it just it makes me sick that I couldn’t take a minute to step back and realize the thoughts that went into that the effort the time this was actually pre-internet. So you actually had to work a little bit to get some flowers sent. It’s just something that sticks in my head and I hope that I learned from that lesson and will never ever repeat it. And you know, it’s interesting. I was thinking this morning about the five love languages because it’s a very helpful thing to know somebody’s love languages and holy cow, you know, one of the five is
[05:58] gifts and just because it happens to be low on my list doesn’t mean it’s low on other people’s list and people don’t always give in the same love language that they like to receive but a lot of people do and so I think it’s just really important that we remember to step back from things occasionally and realize that we can be purposeful. You know, holy cow take a breath sometimes before you speak or react right whether it’s to a child or to a partner or to just somebody out in the marketplace, you know, there’s such a wide range today of what I’m going to call clerks, right? So, you know the kid serving the food at the restaurant or the person at Lowe’s in the checkout line or whatever. They don’t have checkout lines anymore, but it’s it’s
[06:50] such a space to be gracious if we can and it’s not easy because sometimes you just want to scream at somebody and wring their necks and yet is that helpful? No, so this arena of think about your principles bring in your values figure out what high-living means to you and then realize that other people have other definitions of high-living and have other love languages and have other things that is that are going on in their lives and take a beat like take a breath be human about it and be a human being, you know, that’s the term, right? We’re human beings. I often forget and try to be a human doing and I love doing I love checking stuff off and getting stuff done. Nevertheless, I think I get better results in the world
[07:46] if I can just step back every now and then. Yeah, that’s that’s a hard thing to do. The Amish have learned how to slow down. Yeah, they’ve learned how to be craftful craft would be the word crafty resourceful with the skills that they have. Yeah, respectful. Hard-working industrious people now, why don’t we take and I’ve done work with Mennonites not the Amish and I’ve seen that they will find the good and use that good of what works for them. And the community that you’ve developed of prosperity thinkers has done that, you know, we can think of the savings programs that you’ve done the education programs the coaching type of work again. What’s the next book that you have coming out the title of it?
[08:48] Busting the scarcity mindset. I’m so excited for it. There’s going to be such good that I trust that book does because it gives us specific small action items that we can do that. We all need to be working on all of the time all the time. Exactly. And from reading what I did on the Amish, they’re not having a lot of scarcity because they’re doing they’re not aware of the noise around them. They’re just doing and you mentioned being the being as well present with their families very helpful for all of us listeners. Again, if this is a valuable message that helps you share it with your friends share it with family. We’re on Spotify Apple YouTube music everywhere. You can find it hit the share button that way
[09:40] it goes out to someone at least one person that you know that can benefit from this. Well, we’re super excited to have busting scarcity mindset.com up and ready and people that pop their email in there will get alerted when the book is on pre-order and they will get some bonuses. Cool. Thank you, Kim. We’ll definitely make sure to pop the emails. Thank you for listening to the prosperity podcast to take control of your money and have it work for you.
