[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, welcome to the podcast. We’re gonna be talking about storms. Yes, physical storms, financial storms, life storms. There is a solution to this. Kim, you were in a recent storm in Arizona. It made like national news. Tell us about it. Well, it was interesting. We’re sitting in a home, having dinner, lots of glass windows and it is 536 in the afternoon and it goes dark because of all the dust that comes in from these things that they call Haboobs, which are basically a micro dust storm, super concentrated high winds, which actually took the roof off a part of the Phoenix airport, crazy. So, you know, it is interesting though. You brought up there are storms in life.
[00:55] There are storms in our finances and every single person has been through them. And so this is totally a mindset thing, right? Because we cannot keep the storms from happening. We can build the seawall. We can buy insurance. We can put a roof over our heads. We can make sure that we have the foundation of an emergency fund to solve the emergencies and even an opportunity fund because storms could actually create opportunities. And yet how we’re thinking about getting through that storm and whether we’re worrying about a storm before it comes up are all mindset oriented things. So I’m super happy to talk about this because I’ve been through storms, we all have. And so there are ways to deal with it
[01:51] that are effective. And maybe there are ways to deal with it that are not so effective. Absolutely. You mentioned one thing in here, which sounds really counterintuitive for some listeners. I would say for a general audience, our audience is gonna get this. But I wanna jump from this point forward, which is you said that when there are storms, sometimes there’s opportunities, but you have to look at it the right way. So explain that perspective. Well, I’ll start it with a quote that I will share from Dan Sullivan, who’s been my strategic coach for forever. And that is, our brains only see and hear what our eyes and ears are listening to. He says it a little better, but the point is if we’re looking for opportunities,
[02:49] if we’re listening for opportunities, we’ll find them. If instead we’re looking for problems and we’re scared, which I get, I’ve been there, and we’re just overtly focused on all the negative aspects of something, then that’s what our brains will find. And people that have been through massive physical weather-related storms, you know this, because you’ve gone and served in these communities. There are some of them that though their physical literal house may be destroyed, they come out on top. And there are others that don’t. So what’s that difference? Well, it’s mindset. Yeah. The phrase that’s been used often in TED Talks over the last couple of years, maybe the last decade is the word grit.
[03:44] How do you take grit into this? I know grit is a part of mindset, but you know, we look at soldiers, we look at young parents, we look at someone, the sad thing here, people that retire, like that’s a sad moment, because all of those moments require grit, requires the mindset. Let’s talk through that. Well, it’s interesting because we just in our family have a brand new puppy, and it has taken every ounce of grit that I can muster in the last couple of months to not wanna throw that thing off the roof of a three-story building. I mean, my gosh, there’s so much love and so much frustration in one tiny little package. And so to me, grit, and Peter Diamandis is the first one that kind of called this word out to me,
[04:44] is twofold. And it’s a really critical, too strong-legged space. The first is a little bit of human will, a little bit of chutzpah, whatever you wanna call it that just says, gosh darn it, this situation is not gonna get the better of me. And while I may have screamed or wanted to strangle the dog or fill in the blank, especially if you’re a parent, et cetera, you understand that you’ve gotta pull together your wherewithal and get through it. That’s a really important leg of grit. But I think there’s an equally important leg. And that is that sometimes, maybe all the time, maybe first, we need to let go and let God. Our father, mother, God, or whatever term you wanna use for your higher power is there for us
[05:41] if we’ll shut up and listen. And this is very hard for confident, capable people. We think that we can do it all on ourselves and we think that we can just grit our way through it. And we can. And we’ll get even better results if we’ll listen and love. And I mean love like with a capital L, not just a human love, but share our experience and our capability as we’re going through it because we know we have this source or this higher power. That is the same level that you’re talking about as becoming a new parent. It’s the 3 a.m. and holding a child and like not being able, like walking around. You know what it’s like. You’re holding the child, you’re rocking and you’re like, I know I gotta be up in three more hours.
[06:36] Oh, are you serious? And you’ve managed to do it. So let’s go to, I’m constantly for this podcast, I’m trying to tie in like finances and pull that. So we look at a higher power, turning to God, turning to love. We look at using faith in what we’re doing. We look at the storms. We know storms are going to happen. And if we change our perspective, we know that the storm that comes our way is actually an opportunity to become stronger. So it’s good. Everything is gonna be good. When you’ve seen yourself or you’ve seen people that you’ve coached through this, what are one or two things that caused the person to go through and end up the same or worse, meaning bitter? And what are the one or two things
[07:28] that you’ve seen people go through and they have something stronger at the other end? Absolutely. It’s really the same one or two things. It’s just the opposite sides of that coin. So for people that insure, I-N-S-U-R-E, they have things like car insurance, home insurance, liability umbrella, disability, health insurance, life insurance on extra buildings, equipment, et cetera. They insure I-N-S-U-R-E. And what that enables them to do is insure E-N-S-U-R-E that all is going to be okay. Because when we shift the risk, which is all that insurance does, from ourselves, monetarily, financially, as well as mindset orientation, if we shift the risk to an insurance company that deals with this all day long, 100% of the time,
[08:32] usually nationwide, that is their unique ability, then we can use our unique ability even better because we are no longer afraid of that risk. So we wanna insure to ensure that we can set that aside. And part of insurance is having emergency monies, liquid cash available to solve emergencies. And so people on our podcast know that I also talk about opportunities, but let’s just even forget that for a minute. Just having liquid cash to solve emergencies is a part of insurance. And so to flip the coin, it is very difficult to have your mindset be free and thinking from a prosperous standpoint if you don’t have insurance and if you don’t have an emergency fund. And I get it, I have been there. I know what it’s like
[09:29] to have your emergency fund drained and then have another emergency. And I know what it’s like to not have insurance because you weren’t able to get it for that particular risk. I know what that does to our brains, our capabilities, our confidence, our ability to show up. And so when you boil it down, if it is true that you don’t have the emergency fund or maybe they got exhausted and you still have another emergency and or you don’t have insurance, you’re really boiled down to one thing and that is what is going on in your mindset. And the good news is that anybody can shift mindset in a moment. Like as quick as the snap of a finger, you can shift mindset. Now I’m not saying it’s easy and there’s a lot of self work that has to be done,
[10:31] a lot of internal work, a lot of conversations with that higher power because I believe that’s what helps us shift mindset, but it’s at no cost, no financial cost. It might be cost of time, it might be cost of even relationships because if there’s a relationship in your life and it’s constantly pulling you underwater, maybe you need to rethink that relationship. Yet it is doable and it can be done without moving money from one place to another. All we’re doing is moving thought. Absolutely, so the storm, the difficult piece and I’ll be vulnerable for a minute. I had a recent project that was so big that I’d been working on and it had kept me up a couple of nights. I noticed if I have something,
[11:26] you’ve probably felt this too and our listeners have, something that wakes you in the middle of the night and you’re just like, not an anxiety, but just a thinking about it where it’s just like, oh, I gotta think through this and think through this and I had to take the time, as you mentioned, to sit there and say, okay, what is it gonna look like on the other side of this process? And it was through meditation and through prayer and through thinking. There’s like, no, wait, it’s actually, it’s okay it’s a storm right now. And it’s all turned out fine. It’s just, we feel like we don’t have control. So one of the acronyms that you use or one of the words you use in the principles of prosperity is control.
[12:10] You’ve mentioned ensure, I-N-S-U-R-E to get the ensure, E-N-S-U-R-E. As we wrap this episode, what are the steps that you want to ensure that our listeners do? I love that. Well, it really begins with gratitude. And sometimes gratitude is so hard to dig out of the storm. And yet you asked early on, where have I seen somebody weather a storm and come out better or create an opportunity? I have a client that lives in Florida and he had a variety of rental properties that got absolutely flattened by one of the hurricanes a while back. And they were all older properties and he had insurance on them. And he was able to rebuild with stronger foundations and better building materials and is in a way better place.
[13:11] It took him five or six years to get through that process. But that’s an example of where he had the insurance and he had the mindset to not give up and to work through it. And so the way to start that mindset is to be grateful for what you already have. And if you’ve weathered a literal storm, you might literally just be grateful for your life. Like you literally could have lost your life in a particular storm, then start there. And then add on one little thing and one little thing and one little thing. And what I love to do when I’m working in gratitude is find the physical thing that’s really easy to be grateful for. Like literally somebody told me the other day, they were walking down a street
[13:56] that had been decimated by a flood and there was a little tiny weed growing out of the crack of the sidewalk. A weed, right? But it was green and it was growth. And so they zeroed in on that. So they’re grateful for the physical thing, but then you up level that. Well, what is the spiritual element of that physical thing? Well, it’s growth. Okay, be grateful for growth. And then you can just expand on that and expand on that and expand on that. And this is a practice that we can do in our lives that is very important to me in my relationship with Father, Mother, God, because I look at those moments when I’m trying to dig gratitude out of the storm and I figure out, am I praising or am I pleading?
[14:46] And so often, especially when we’re in prayer, we’re pleading. It’s okay, that’s certainly a way to pray. But I try to ask myself, hold on, am I grateful for what I already have? And that, and being grateful for a weed in the crack of a sidewalk is an example of praising. That was so good, so good. That’s gonna be a great clip. I think me just sitting across from my husband from the microphone talking with you, it’s easy to, and this is gonna sound really weird, okay? But it’s easy to look and say, you know what, Kim has authored all of these books and she has an answer to all of these questions. Like, when is it that she’s facing this storm? Like, really? And here’s the deal, it’s happening at all times.
[15:37] And if it’s not, we’re probably not growing. And like, that’s not a way to live. Like, we’re not living in reverse. We’re living in the present and forward. So Kim, thank you for sharing that. Again, it’s another little element where it’s like, okay, this isn’t just something in my life or something that happens to others. Like, all of us go through it.
