Consequences of Not Thinking Big Enough – Episode 554

This episode talks about the concept of “thinking big enough” inspired by some song lyrics, highlighting the importance of songs as they carry messages that stick. Kim, introduces the term “visioneering”, which substitutes setting specific goals with envisioning a future that inspires and propels us forward, as she believes goals can be inherently limiting. She explains that visioneering differs from goal setting as it encourages long-term and expansive thinking that is constantly changing, instead of being strictly focused on achieving specific, short-term, and measurable results. She makes the point that we should keep dreaming and visioneering, and always refer back to what we genuinely want, rather than focusing on societal expectations.

[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, welcome to the podcast. Today, we’re going to be speaking about not thinking big enough. And this episode comes from some song lyrics. I know. Strange, right, Kim? Yes. But songs are so valuable. That’s why I made that pathetic attempt a few years ago to write a life insurance song, because the message is sticking people’s heads. Well, that’s not a pathetic attempt. I mean, I think of, you know, that one of the authors we’ve mentioned many times, BJ Fogg, from all of his habit work, he went through and created kids songs. And I remember that, yeah, you know, to teenagers, they may think that’s lame. But to a five-year-old, if they start to sing about habits and then, you know,

[00:55] they become teenagers, maybe something will stick, so it works. I believe it. So I’m going to read some of the lyrics of this song. However, there’s one word, it was it was the one word in this that I heard it and I thought, wait, what, what? And I clicked back again. I was on the airplane when I listened to it and I listened to it probably three times because it’s like, oh, that was such, that just didn’t make sense. But it did make sense. The reason why it was harder for me to understand the artist is from Scotland and his accent is very thick. So I’m going to read some of the lyrics and then we’re going to talk about it. The song says, I lost my crown when it hit the ground with an almighty thud.

[01:43] I went to pick it up and reveal my weaknesses to the crowd. So this is where it comes in. And I lost my home when I lost my throne to a successor with far more expansive plans than I ever did. And this is the word he goes, I advocated. But I thought he said, I abdicated. Right. So the line in here, he goes, basically, I lost my home when I lost my throne to a successor with far more expansive plans. So we’re in life. Are we not dreaming big enough? And because we’re not dreaming big enough, we’re having problems. Kim, we want to hear it from you. Oh, gosh, what a fun topic. So it is very interesting to me that for really the bulk of my adult life, I have chosen not to set specific goals around a lot

[02:53] of things because goals can be limiting. And if we realize this now, our society is steeped in goal setting. And I absolutely set some goals for some things. And yet, at the same time, I’m a big believer that vision nearing is a much better approach. Well, vision nearing enables you to think very big, very long term, very expansively. Vision nearing is not goal setting. Goal setting is very specific, very measurable. SMART, right, very achievable, very realistic with the time frame. And the challenge with goal setting is, while we can get some good for setting in a goal and achieving a goal, we can get a lot of bad if we don’t achieve the goal because we’re constantly in what Dan Sullivan calls

[03:51] the gap between where we are and where we want to be. Well, if you think about it, where we want to be is always moving. It’s kind of like the horizon that’s out there. It really doesn’t matter how fast you run. The horizon is always moving. And so that ideal, again, to use some Dan Sullivan wording, can be hugely inspirational, but it can also be very disruptive if we’re constantly measuring ourselves between where we are and where we want to be. And then if that’s the case, why on earth would we set even bigger opportunities, visions, whatever other word you want to use, not goals, because then we would feel like we were always in the gap all the time. And that’s why sometimes I just think the idea of goal setting needs to be

[04:37] scrapped. And the idea of visions, visioneering, dreaming, some people call it, is so much more valuable because that can inspire us, that can pull us forward. That will not limit us. And maybe between here and a vision, I have a goal that is specific and measurable in short term and short time frame, et cetera. Yet I always want to have that vision because, gosh, here’s the other thing that we know, people that accomplish a goal and don’t super fast set a next one really flounder because they they don’t have anything to work on. They don’t know what to put their energies into. And that’s very detrimental for human beings. So let’s visioneer, let’s set that bigger expectation. Let’s brainstorm or dream or whatever word works for you to have a much

[05:35] larger space in which we’re making an impact, helping others, getting good value ourselves because of it, et cetera. I like that, the visioneering piece, because you’re layering in what is a trap to be short term and making it longer. So I want to share a quick little experience that I had and then get your feedback on this. So recently I was on a boat. It was actually it was I was on a vacation in Hong Kong. We were on a ferry. We went from one side of the bay to the other, having a great time with the family. This is something that people could visioneer, correct? Something that the goal and. Up pulls to the side of us, a gigantic yacht. I mean, we’re talking hundreds and hundreds of million dollars.

[06:30] Yeah. And I said in a joke to the family and people around us, I said, wow, I think I’m dreaming a little too small. So take that. And that was a joke. I just for the record, have no desire for a yacht like that at all. But how is it that we can visioneer up? Because there may be someone that lives in small town America and their goal is to get a five acre piece of land and work that. Whereas we’ve got someone that lives in Montana and they say, oh, if I can just get the thousand acres next door and then the next thousand or whatever that may be. So talk us through that, how we’re going to get our people that are listening to think more prosperously and larger. Well, I believe it’s so important to start where you are and to be uber, uber clear to not judge yourself against others.

[07:27] And so a lot of life, I think, is figuring out what we truly want, not what we think other people want, not what we want with the limitations that come because of X, Y, Z, past or money or education. But what is it that we truly want? And this is a very hard thing for human beings. I actually just a couple of years ago had an opportunity to rebrand, been in business 30 years, ready to go for another 30 years, wanted to clean the slates and just start anew. And it caused me, as rebranding would, to really, really think about what’s the message that I want to put out here? What do I want to be about? And it was really interesting because the marketing people that we had helping us at the time really wanted me to do something with my name in it.

[08:20] And I just resisted it. I just couldn’t do it. And I bought over 100 URLs over the course of a weekend where every little opportunity that I thought of a brand, a name, a word, whatever, I bought the URL immediately because I knew I just needed to kind of sit with it for a while and then something would bubble to the top. Well, as we know, our brand is now Prosperity Thinkers, which when you look back on it, it’s mind boggling that URL was available. And to me, when you’re branding, that’s all that matters is the URL, like everything else, LLC, everything else can be called whatever it needs to be called. But that URL matters. And still the marketing guys were like, no, we want it to be Kim Butler life or we want it to be whatever.

[09:08] And I just, again, really resisted. And now three years later, it’s very clear to me that for me, branding something with my name is limiting because I have an amazing team. You are part of that team. Our listeners are part of that team. I don’t want the Kim Butler name to be the brand. It’s too much about me. Now, for somebody else, maybe that is the thing that’s right. And this is where I think the message just really needs to be driven home that don’t judge. It doesn’t matter what other people think. It doesn’t matter what other people want you to do. You and your maker, your father, mother, God need to go and have some quiet time so that you can truly figure out what it is that you want.

[09:58] Then you can decide on is your vision five acres or five hundred acres? Is your vision a tiny little sailboat or a massive yacht or something in between? And this is the other beautiful thing about visions is they can and should be changing. I remember when I was in my 30s, the car that I drove was so important to me as it should be. It was a tool of production. I was out and about in a city that enabled me to see people all the time from my car, in my car, with my car, just because the nature of how I was doing business. And it mattered. Now I drive the filthiest farm pickup you have ever seen in your life. And we have another car, too, so that’s handy. But I really don’t care what I’m in, what people think of it or anything else.

[10:53] And so that’s a good example of how our visions can really, really change and we should let them. Oh, I love it. That’s so good. Seriously. I want to take that the thread that you’re going in and I’m going to recap a couple of things because I’m I’m trying to create bullet points. So the bullet points that I’m getting is that we are going to vision something and the vision of vision nearing of it will be fluid. Meaning, at times we may think bigger, at times we may adjust and we’ll also adjust what it looks like. So if it’s important to you in your 20s, it might not be important in your 30s. And again, life circumstances. Going back to that song lyric, I want to take one line in here, which is to a successor with far more expansive plans than I ever did.

[11:47] So for us, people that are taking the lead of their families, taking the lead of their businesses, taking the lead of their finances. We don’t want to get into the world of comparing. We’re not doing that. But I’m talking about us taking that leadership role so that we are getting our children, our team members, the community members to say, yes, I want to be a part of that. Walk us through the prosperity thinking framework of that camp. Yeah, that is a big, big lift and something that I am conscious of all the time, because all of us are leading all the time. We’re either leading our own thoughts or leading somebody else’s thoughts. And so it’s imperative that when we are struggling, which I do, too, I struggle with a small vision or I struggle with being scared about something,

[12:43] which is causing scarcity thinking, which is clearly the opposite of prosperity thinking. I need to take the time when that is occurring and go in that quiet closet and talk to listen to probably the more important thing, whatever that higher power is for me. I use the term Father Mother God so that I can get my thinking on straight so that I can lead myself out of that scarcity space as well as lead others because visioneering cannot occur when we’re fearful. It’s just like gratitude cannot occur when we’re fearful. Now, sometimes it might be appropriate to take a confident confidant aside and have a conversation. Maybe Todd and I need to go in that closet and I’m going to ask for help or my sister, Tammy Brannon, who’s a great sounding board.

[13:39] If I’m fearful or operating from scarcity thinking, it’s OK to go get help from a human being if for whatever reason, I’m not able to get help from a higher power at that time. And sometimes brainstorming solutions on a human level is helpful and that kind of thing. Nevertheless, the quicker and the better we are at solving the problem for ourselves with help from Father Mother God or maybe reading something inspirationally or doing some metaphysical work or some spiritual work or some inspirational work or some meditative work or whatever it is, you know, going on a run, going and petting the dog or whatever it is that we need to do to shift our thinking. And sometimes we need to shift our physical bodies in order to shift our thinking.

[14:27] Do that first and then go be a leader of your own mind, your own thoughts, your own words that are coming out of your mouth from said thoughts. And then consequently, everybody else that’s in your vicinity, either online or in person. OK, I dig it. I dig it. That’s a good formula right there. I think if we were going to go to the Prosperity Doctor, you wrote us a pretty good recipe ago. I’m curious on this episode because this was specifically thought up and I listened to that song well over a week ago and I had just sat there and and really wanted to to extract something for you as a listener. And again, I don’t know where you are. I don’t know if that means that you just finished up the best financial year of your life or if you just took the hardest beating of your life.

[15:31] Honestly, the both you can react in a positive, gratitude, prosperity way, because taking a financial beating is a great way to say, hey, I have new opportunities and I have nothing to lose. And having the best year is the time to say, OK, I’ve got some successes behind me. Let’s look at legacy and and use that momentum. So, Kim, for us to have the final remedy, final recipe of this, I want to to wrap up this episode. How are you going to dream bigger for the prosperity community this year? Oh, a challenging question. Well, quick story. I office on the second floor of our home and so right outside my office is a deck that is up high. And we’re also on a hill. And so I can see a long, long way.

[16:40] And it’s such a special place to me because somehow that physical view or geographic view, if you will, enables me, I believe, along with a lot of time spent outdoors, along with a lot of spiritual work, along with a lot of metaphysical listening to have a very, very big vision. And it’s one of families that are leaving heritage to their children. And so when we think about legacy or inheritances, I want us to think beyond money. Money matters. Money affects everything that matters. And some people think that money doesn’t matter, but because money affects everything that matters, it does matter. And yet, when you think of your legacy to your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and ideally great, great grandchildren, since we’re all going to be living to 120 or so,

[17:42] it is imperative that we think about what we are leaving in them, which are the stories and the lessons and the learnings, not necessarily to them. And so that’s why I’m so grateful that we have books out there that will stand the test of time to help with that message. Love it. It’s great. I’m going to wrap with an observation as the other party of this podcast, which is one thing that I see you doing different now than in the past, is that you’ve been willing to be more vulnerable and to tell stories of who you are. And you’ve been willing to focus on the things that matter. As you just mentioned, legacy, I didn’t know you were going to say that. But as you mentioned in, you know, call it your 20s, 30s, the vehicle mattered or maybe the office location mattered.

[18:46] Oh, yeah. And it’s not to say that those things aren’t important. It’s to say that you found what is the most important for you right now. And that legacy is it. And again, things may change. It may morph to something else. But for now, it looks like this community is. And so for all of you listening to the podcast, we absolutely care for you. We’re so grateful to see you think prosperously. And as we invest this time, we know that you will get something out of it. And then it’s going to affect your kids and those people around you. And then just imagine where you’ll be a week from now when you come to the next episode. So thank you for tuning in. Thank you for listening to the Prosperity Podcast.
