[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, welcome to this episode. Today we’re gonna be talking about changes in leadership. There was a huge announcement a couple of days ago here in America. Kim, you don’t watch the news. I don’t watch the news, but I did get texts from people. Did you hear about all the changes? I believe so. My husband does pay attention and will share things from time to time. So I’m subconsciously aware of it, I would say. Okay, so we’re both, just so we’re clear, we’re both talking about the new Ben and Jerry’s flavor of ice, I’m kidding, I’m kidding. It’s not the new ice cream. It’s the changes in our presidency in the election. And coupled with that, a couple of days ago,

[00:47] we had CrowdStrike, a big, call it an apocalyptic event with technology, grounding flights throughout the world. The reason why I mention these things, and this is not a political podcast, it’s that huge events occur in life and we can either become a spectator and gossip or we can take the lessons. So here are the lessons that I wanted to extract out of you while we do this, which is we can see that there will be events in life. So when cataclysmic events happen, what should families do to prepare for those and when they do happen and changes need to happen with policies, with finances, whatever, how do they approach? That’s where I wanna take it. I don’t wanna get political and I don’t think you do either.

[01:42] So true, you know, it’s interesting. I was in a hotel and in the airport on Friday and got the joy of dealing with those things. And so it’s really very critical that we check our mindset first. And this is why our company is called Prosperity Thinkers, because when you get the news that your flight is so far delayed that you’ll miss your connection, you must have a adjustment in your mindset immediately. Otherwise, you’re gonna spend the next three hours in complete misery. And so Todd and I are skilled at adjusting mindsets in that space and not perfect at it either, right? I mean, sometimes I’ll struggle with something and he will say something to get me off whatever little train I’ve gotten on,

[02:32] or sometimes he’s struggling with something and he’ll make a comment and I’ll suggest maybe a different way to look at it or what have you. And so we help each other in that realm. And that is absolutely the first thing that families should do is first of all, identify the mindset and second of all, support each other and getting into that mindset because it doesn’t, you know, we are still human. It doesn’t always happen automatically. You can train yourself to have it happen automatically, but just like the quote black swan events that occur, we can have black swan mental aspects occur as well, meaning you just didn’t get your mindset right that particular moment. So that’s the first thing.

[03:15] The second thing is, and I have another family experience where somebody was required to stay at their work overnight and she said, I know that this can happen. I don’t know why I don’t have a go bag. And so I’m guessing the Shaw family has go bags and it is a unique aspect of life that I wouldn’t have ever really thought about, but more and more often, you know, this is absolutely true when you fly, you best keep the things with you that you know you really need. And sometimes even just in life having a go bag, you know, the ability to get up and go quickly and have in at the important papers and medicine if necessary and mindset support and you know, change of clothes, et cetera, to move quickly.

[04:03] And then right behind that is that emergency fund, that age old emergency fund that most financial people just skip over. You know, they may say that you should have it, but it is imperative because it lets us make good decisions. It helps us really think long term in the face of a short term emergency. And that can make all the difference for your family and your life and how you get that emergency handled. Okay, so you actually touched on several pieces that are really helpful for our listeners. They could almost compile a list and say, okay, we’ve got an emergency fund. We have a go bag, which can be the physical go bag. There’s gonna be more than likely a digital go bag, meaning in case of emergency, this is who we contact.

[04:55] This is what we do. You’ve pieced together the foundation, which is the mindset. Let’s get over to the leadership piece, meaning when trauma happens, a person is either going to grow into the event or they’re going to shrink. We’ve seen it happen time and time again. Two weeks ago, I was the first on scene of a rollover. I have a medical kit with me all the time and time just slows down. I went in, I took care of what I needed to do. Now for a family, when a serious event happens, what do we do to buckle up the leadership? What needs to happen there? Help us understand that. Well, it’s a great question. And this is where you in each person’s case want to be a leader for your family and everybody can be a leader.

[05:52] And so there’s two parts to that. The first is who is your family following as a leader? Are they following people that are fear-based, that are causing too much conspiracy theory conversation constantly on the lookout for stranger danger every single turn of the corner? Or are they following possibly a God-centered approach or a environment where positivity and capability reign? And I mean, R-E-I-G-N as in like rule the day. This is a very important thing for you to be very conscious of for your family because you have your own approach, but what are your children doing? If they’re not guided, they may be following a friend’s family’s fear-mongering approach and you’re not even aware of it.

[06:50] And then additionally, teaching your children how to be leaders. So they need to know, for example, who to call. They need to have addresses memorized in case a phone gets destroyed as an example and phone numbers memorized. They’ll want to have a space where they have an area of the family situation that they’re the leader in. So for example, I’ve seen parents walk into the airport and say, okay, it’s Johnny’s turn. Lead us through checking in, checking our bags, getting through security, finding the gate and getting the family settled. That is a great skill for a five-year-old or a 10-year-old or a 15-year-old to be able to do. And maybe there’s another person in the family that has the knowledge of, okay,

[07:45] if our home is destroyed, where do we go? What do we do? Who do we call? Again, things memorized that are in phones, but what happens if your phone doesn’t work? If it got squished in the car accident or left on the airplane or what have you? So leadership can really just be taught, modeled, and also very purposeful because we don’t have to pay attention to everything that’s out there. In fact, we don’t want to. There are 30 million messages per day these days or some absolutely insane number. So leadership is picking what you as an individual want to pay attention to and then purposefully helping your family pick what they as individuals want to pay attention to and then as a family as a whole.

[08:42] And then leadership is also being very purposeful about knowing where to turn if you don’t know how to lead. So let’s say something has occurred and there’s an area that’s outside of your family’s expertise where another leader needs to be looked to, then to have a few things that your children are taught that they know to look for in a leader will help them not only in this period of time as our nation goes through a transition of leadership, but the next time four years down the road and the next day at school when maybe a sports team is being chosen or a debate team or what have you, they’ll know what good leadership qualities are. They’ll know how to identify them, who to look for that displays them.

[09:38] They’ll contribute to them themselves. And then my final point are the followers because every human being will have times in their life where they need to be a good follower. And so learning how to be a good leader helps you know how to be a good follower because you know what you want in your followers. And the reverse is true as well. Learning how to be a good follower to take instruction, to be coachable, to be humble, to be willing to begin again, to ask for help. These are traits of a follower that are equally as important. And then of course will help us be better leaders. So good, I love it. I love it because this is an episode right now, the changing of the guard type of material that a family could listen to and they could say,

[10:35] okay, regardless of what side of the aisle they sit on, they can take leadership, they can become aware, and they can take full responsibility as followers and dutifully doing that. Kim, this was amazing. Thank you for sharing on this episode. You’re welcome. Thank you for listening to the Prosperity Podcast.
