“Providing” especially for the family, goes way beyond the context of money.
Kim and Spencer tackle the different stages of life, particularly the winding-down stage. Time will come where your role as a family provider will end. However, if you own a business that provides a passive income, you can move forward smoothly into the next stage.
Yet, Kim emphasizes you should also pass down wealth beyond money — legacy, vision, lessons, and family tradition. In this episode, Spencer and Kim’s conversation revolves around other relevant topics such as death day preparation and celebration of life.

[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Hello, Prosperity thinkers. Welcome to the podcast. What’s fascinating about this episode is there are different stages in life that we’re in. And you could be in the stage where you’re just getting started with your career and your financial footholding. And then we have listeners that are at the very far end of it, meaning they’re winding down. They’re still contributing. We’re not going to use that R word, retire. No way. But they’re winding down and they’re thinking more of that legacy. So this episode, we’re going to tackle a couple of pieces in between. Are you game for it, Kim? Absolutely. So what happens is we get focused on our careers. We move forward and we’re wearing the hat where we’re focused on providing
[00:52] and we’re creating something. And at some point we wake up and we realize that the hard work we’ve done is done, meaning the providing piece is done. The family will be okay. There’s something after that. And what I find in most books or podcasts, not a lot of content in that area because most, it feels like the battle, the fight is done up to there and then it’s like, well, what now? So let’s talk about the what now. That’s a great question. It’s really why we wrote the perpetual wealth book because there is so much opportunity in the space of identifying and focusing on and building systems for moving wealth forward to the next generation. And by wealth, I don’t mean only money. It’s legacy beyond money.
[01:48] It’s absolutely all the monetary parts, but it’s also your vision, your values, the things that are important to you, the various holiday activities that you have that have meant so much to your family in terms of traditions, the learnings that you’ve had that you want to inch forward into the next generation, I mean, just goes on and on, and you said it really well. Everybody is focused on the leading up to part and not as many focused on the next step and then there’s a final step there too, we’ve done some podcasts and blog posts about death day preparation and I think if you can almost work backwards, begin with the end in mind, if you will, to quote Stephen Covey, if you have death day prepared for, then the space
[02:37] between the providing and death day is easier to get your mind around structure, organize, systematize, build, et cetera. So if the providing is leading up to some period of time, and I do want to say in literally every vision, icon, document, language, book, podcast, et cetera, that we’ve made, we always make sure that it’s never just one peak in a life, that there are numerous peaks and we use the word mountain tops, plural, to identify that because I do feel it’s so important. The providing hits a peak and then there’s some valleys and then it may hit another peak, which may or may not be at a higher level, it could just be a different peak or maybe it’s at a lower level and then it’s at a
[03:30] higher level again, but that’s just a really important, I think, visualization to identify with is the peaks or the mountain tops. Nevertheless, there is going to be a death day and there is going to be a space between one of those mountain tops and that death day and actually we’re recording this right after Betty White just passed on at like less than 30 days before, I’m not sure of the timeframe, just shortly before her 100th birthday and it was really interesting because Todd had just sent me an article about how part of the reason she feels like she’s living so long is that she doesn’t need anything green and she was like 99 and super happy and all was well and then literally 30 days later
[04:14] I hear that she’s passed on in her sleep, like awesome, so cool. And so that space in the middle, if we can get clear on what’s important to us, if we can get clear on what we are doing to move things forward, if we can get clear on how we are still serving, I think one of the most important things in life, cause it is super, super easy. If we feel like we’re done providing, if we built up the providing or we have a business or we have real estate or whatever that provides us passive income more than we can think about using in the rest of our lives and possibly even other generations as well, the question is still there. How are you serving? Let’s take into a couple pieces. So we’re talking about serving.
[05:04] We’re talking about having several different peaks and that will vary. We’ve talked about creating a bookend at the end of it and taking care of those things. Have you found that a lot of people don’t do it because of not wanting to have the conversation or is it a fear? What is, what’s the reason for not taking care of the end? It is really interesting thing in our society. And I don’t know if there are other countries that maybe do a better job with this, but I think everything that you mentioned is a problem. People don’t want to deal with it. They don’t want to think about it. They’re afraid of it. They think it might hurt. I don’t know that reasons are endless, but I’ll always remember the day
[05:42] that our entire family went to a funeral home in an effort to do some death day preparation. The hook, the lady was horrified. I mean, it was just written all over her face. There we were six adults, three separate families laughing and having a good time trying to be respectful because it was clear how pained she was. And to me, it was perfect. It was awesome. And it became clear to us that funeral homes are not the best place, by the way, to do death day preparation. But it seemed to me a completely logical and normal thing to do. Okay. Maybe I’m weird. I don’t know. What I do know is that when that two by four does hit, and it can absolutely seem like that sometimes, the family that has done some preparation
[06:26] is going to be so much more able to deal with it and come out of it quicker. It being whatever period of grief is necessary, et cetera, and be able to move forward more effectively and efficiently and with love and grace and gratitude than a family that is not mentally, physically, psychologically, systems wise, and in every other way, done some kind of preparation for it. So it is absolutely part of what I talk about anytime I get a soapbox to talk about it on is not only the death day preparation, but all of the steps in between, which are part of that perpetual wealth book, which by the way, we have a workbook and a game, a card game coming out to support said perpetual wealth information.
[07:14] Yes. We’re super excited about it. Way to go PT team, because the team is the one that came up with both ideas. And so this is just something that we will continue to help our community get better results with. Ooh, I love it. So I want to add in a piece and this is perfect because yesterday, a friend of mine, his father passed away and they had done a lot of this work. And that ties in with a book that I’m reading and I am going to connect some dots, it may seem a little weird, but I’ll connect them. I’m reading a book about Indian philosophies and it’s about karma. And in my reading this morning, it said one of the challenges with our civilization now is that we’re not fully engaged, meaning it’s not a
[08:05] society where we can really let out our emotions and cry or really laugh. And the piece that you’re talking about here of this preparation, if we do it, it means that when we have that experience, when someone passes, we can hand be fully engaged. My friend had done that work. And so now their family gets to celebrate the life versus if you don’t do the work, you may be numb. You might not get to celebrate. You might not get to fully grieve. And that’s a sad thing because that’s when everyone needs you the most. Yeah, really well said. But it’s interesting circling back to animals are such good examples of being fully present and really feeling whatever it is that they feel. And they’re also awesome ways to bring laughter into your life.
[08:59] And so how amazing is it for that family that they’ve done the work and it will pay off in spades. And I’m so grateful to hear that. As we go forward, if that’s something that we can help people do, and everybody’s going to have their own particular approaches to it, but it’s so valuable to just get in, do the work. It’s so much easier while everybody is alive and healthy. And then you’re not surprised. You’re not caught with the two by four and your family scrambling to come up with the pieces and parts to inch forward. Yeah, absolutely. For you listeners, if you have questions about how to prepare for that, or if you already have something in place and you’re just looking to refine it, send
