[00:01] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast. Prosperity thinkers, welcome to the podcast. We’re going to be talking about the resurgence of family, Christianity, and prosperity in America. Are you feeling it too? I am, and I’m hearing it and seeing it, and I just love it. On the previous podcast, we talked about how there can be some good things on YouTube. Well, I’m actually wearing a shirt from my alma mater today. It’s Principia College, and one of the things that I love to do on YouTube is go onto the channel that they have where they put students’ presentations and choir concerts and that type of thing. Over the holidays, I have a little extra time on my hands, so I will enjoy my alma mater, which is a Christian school’s Christmas presentation and Bible readings
[01:01] and that kind of thing. I’m always so grateful that I get to do that because I’m not going to go to Elsa, Illinois, nor St. Louis, Missouri, which is where the high school is of this same system. It is so cool to bring Father, Mother, God into conversations these days, not only at a family level, but at an individual level, a business level. I just saw something the other day from Ed Rush, who is a fighter pilot, about how to have conversations with God and listen to God better. Have the humility and the patience and then the fortitude and confidence to be out in the public stating how they listen to my term, Father, Mother, God. He just used the word God. So I love that this is the case and I love that we’re combining it with having
[01:54] stronger families. One of the things that we do inside our prosperity parents community is talk about the three E’s as it relates to raising your children. The first E is expectations, the second E is earnings, and the third is And that one of the very common expectations is scripture memorization or scripture quoting or reading or having a conversation around. And so again, over the holidays, I have a little extra time. I got to read in a brand new version of a study Bible that just came out. I can’t quote you the specifics. Maybe we’ll put that in the show notes. But this is such an enlightening space, I believe, for us human beings to be okay with and to be able to ask the question. I asked this of somebody recently.
[02:53] I said, are you okay with me speaking spiritually for a minute? And it’s not like I prayed with him or for him. I certainly could have, but it was a business call. I love the use of the word inspirational. If people struggle with the word spiritual, which I think is also becoming more common in our lexicon and very, very valuable. But if for whatever reason that’s a struggle for you, use the word inspirational and get that type of conversation, reading, communication, listening, watching into your family. I mean, we have amazing things on TV or YouTube or Netflix or Amazon Prime these days with The House of David and The Chosen, right? I mean, these are very popular films and how grateful we can be for them.
[03:42] It’s so impactful right now. You know, you mentioned YouTube. So I’m going to share a story about learning value. And this is one I learned that I went through with my daughter. This is a couple weeks ago, maybe about a week before Christmas. And so I’m going through and I saw a YouTube video of a guy that would get boxes of half dollars from the bank. And it’s called a Loomis box or a bank box. And half dollars come in a box of $500 worth. So it’s a thousand coins. And what people do is weigh the role of half dollars. And if they have no silver in them, they’ll weigh about 224 grams. But if they do have silver in them, they weigh more. So this was an experiment I did with my daughter sitting around the table.
[04:40] Really, it just like I wanted to listen to her talk and just, you know, spend good time. So for all of you listeners, America used to have silver in it. Right from up until 1970. So between 1965 and 1970, it had 40% silver before 1965. So 64 and before was 90% silver. So in our first box, we spent about an hour and I just listened to Ellie talk and it was cool. We found two 40% silver coins. And, you know, find out whatever that is at spot price. Call it between 10 and 13 bucks, somewhere around there. That’s cool. Our next box. We go through it. We find one. And when we weighed out the coin rolls, one of them weighed more and it looked different. It was like hand rolled. And I go, hmm. And so that was our prize.
[05:39] That was the one we set to the side. So this would be the last one. So of course, Ellie gets to open it up and we roll through it and found a 90% silver. We uncovered four silver coins worth about 65 American dollars. Okay, value. So I said to her, okay, would a bank teller or a person at a store know what this is worth? She goes, no, they didn’t have someone that taught them. I said, now if you took it to the store, would you get $65 worth? No, you just get face value. Two bucks because it’s four coins. Okay, cool. Well, let’s get you started on stacking your silver this way. So I made her pay me $2 because she has to pay for it. Absolutely. So she got $64 worth of silver. That’s a lesson in value right there.
[06:28] So it ties in with what you’re talking about here of the tightening of the family. It’s the tightening and the resurgence of faith and of understanding value. One of the comments that I give as often as anybody will let me is cut the amount of money that you spend on your kids in half and double the amount of time that you spend with your kids. And that is exactly what you did is you chose to sit at the table with her and listen to her talk and you had a little project going as well, which is always so helpful because kids don’t want to think that they’re sitting and talking with their dad for an hour. But that was precious, precious time. And I’m sure that you did a good job of using your two ears and
[07:23] one mouth in the appropriate ratio. Oh, yes. And you know what? It was so good. Will every once in a while my wife and I will will use in the very specific language. I’ll say it’s so nice when we get to talk with our kids and it’s so nice when they talk at us. You have to create the space for that. And so back to the resurgence of family and Christianity and such. How is it that we put ourselves into prosperous situations so that we are talking with and getting talked at? It’s such a great question. I know that it is a challenge in today’s world to build in the time. And yet that’s really what it takes is calendar control and building in a very purposeful way in the time because you can’t be rushed.
[08:22] You can’t force this. You never know what attitude that child is going to bring to the table on that particular day. I believe that one of the easiest ways to do it is to have some type of physical activity that you’re involved with also and then like I said use those two ears and one mouth in that ratio meaning you listen way way way more than you speak and that’s your with versus at conversation. You want your children talking at you and then you do a good job of listening and but engaged listening right like no phones no distraction Etc. Whether it’s you go out for a family walk or you create a special conversation pod in a particular area of your home or you just shut off the TV, please shut
[09:10] off the TV and set the phones aside and that type of thing and the purposefulness of scheduled time and so it could be date nights. It could be family dinner nights. It could be a whole variety of purposeful time to enable conversation and it’s very very critical during that time that you are very very present with your children, which again in most cases means no phones. You know, sometimes the phones got to come out to do a little research or whatever, but then put it back away and make it a point to do so so that they really see your focus. I believe even my dog can tell if I am distracted by my phone. I sense her if she’s wanting something and I have my phone or I pull my phone out. I sense her shift in demeanor, which is pretty amazing
[10:08] whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter, but it’s just something that we can be aware of and we can schedule time. Absolutely. There’s a lot of we’re going to call this invisible truth to that just as it happens when we have a thought a feeling whatever that may be training ourselves to act on that. Let’s do that. So meaning we have the thoughts go share this book with this person do it go have this conversation with the child parent whatever it is do it. Those are the things that matter. We’ve just gone through the holidays chem. Can you give us one experience that you had that was we’ll call it not planned and it happened and it was beautiful. I made the space. I was in tune. It happened. Absolutely.
[11:08] So backing up a holiday at the Thanksgiving time. We had our children and grandchildren here and one morning it was towards the end of the trip the two-year-old granddaughter was up early and I asked if I could take her out to the barn with me. So it was just her and me. It was in the morning. The parents were able to stay behind with the other grandchild who’s one year old and so we’re walking and and walking is just such an amazing time to listen and this two-year-old is still not speaking sentences. I mean we can you can decipher a word here and there but there’s a lot of jabber. I mean just jabber jabber jabber the entire way and you know, she’s at she’s at my thigh height and yet just happy and every now and then she’d look
[12:03] up at me. She had a little hat on so I couldn’t really see her face a lot of the time. So most of the time I don’t know who she thought she was talking to but what a unique experience to just be able to listen to her and to pick up on the few words that I could pick up on you know rock was a good one. She had fun throwing rocks in the lake and that type of thing was just very special. I trust that it was special for her too. 100% that right there best way to end the episode if we as listeners have not had experiences like that in a while go make it happen Kim great example. Thank you so much for sharing. Thank you for listening to the Prosperity podcast to take control of your money and have it work for you.
