[00:00] Welcome to the Prosperity Podcast, fresh alternative personal finance talk for independent thinkers who prosper outside of Wall Street. Here’s your host, best-selling author, Kim D.H. Butler. Welcome listeners to another episode of the Prosperity Podcast. This episode, we’re actually going to be doing a short and sweet episode that’s jam-packed about how we learn and what we are currently learning right now and we’re going to find out what Kim’s favorite books are currently, the favorite things she’s learning and the skills and the other things that she’s putting her time into. So Kim, we would love to hear what are the books that you’re diving into? What are the courses? What are the things that are piquing your interest currently?
[00:54] Well, I’m so happy to share. I absolutely love books and I think the best invention in the whole wide world is the Kindle. I actually read a lot of my books on my cell phone, which I do have a big one, but it’s still people look at that and they think that’s crazy, but it’s so awesome because then I always have books with me and I don’t have to haul them around and I just am super, super grateful for that. Interestingly enough, I also happen to have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 books sitting right here on my desk that I’ve literally been in the middle of in the last few weeks and so I’ll share them as well. Wonderful. Yeah. I have a Kindle also, but I’ve been sent hard copies, which is really, really nice.
[01:33] So often when that happens, I’ll just go ahead and buy the Kindle version anyway so that I can read it there. I have to tell you one other funny thing. We have this No Movies on School Nights and we’re not perfect about it, but somebody said something about that to me recently and kind of questioned the School Nights thing. And I said, well, I’m still in school. I’m still learning. And they said, are you teaching tomorrow? Is that what you’re saying? School? No. I’m still learning. So all right. So on my Kindle, I’m going to cover them quickly because there’s kind of a long list, but I will give the author so people can find them if they want. Never Stop Learning. Interesting. Yeah, literally.
[02:15] That’s on my Kindle right now, 33% and I just started it by Bradley Stats, S-T-A-A-T-S. The book When, W-H-E-N by Daniel Pink. The Bible is a favorite author of mine. The Message, like the Bible version called The Message. Another book called Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. A book on reverse mortgages by Wade Fowl, that’s P-F-A-U. The novel New York by Edward Rutherford, F-U-R-D. And are you ready for this? The Good Good Pig. Oh, I’ve never heard of that one. It’s hilarious. I think the author is Si Mont-Gon and Spencer, I happen to know that you all just moved to a farm. You must get and read The Good Good Pig. And it’s funny that and I didn’t even read all the Kindle ones. Those are just like the top five.
[03:14] But this is actually a really good insight into Kim because there’s some obvious business books on there, you know, Reverse Mortgage, Daniel Pink’s When, The Never Stop Learning. There’s a couple spiritual books on there, which are very important to me. And then there’s a couple free day books on there because I like to separate out my reading and when I’m on vacation or on the weekends, I try really hard not to read business books because I love reading business books and I would read them all the time. But then I would find I would be thinking about my business so much on the weekends and I really didn’t want to do that. I wanted to disconnect and have a clean break. So I literally will put a business book down on a Friday at the end of the day,
[03:55] like maybe if I’ve read it a little bit at the noon hour or something, and I will not pick it back up again until Monday. And then also, if I’m on vacation, I don’t take business books. I make some exceptions. You know, if I’m on a plane or whatever, I’ll read whatever I feel like. But for the most part, I work hard to have only free day books on vacation, which is why New York and The Good Good Pig, because we just got back from vacation, it’s why those are there. So that’s the Kindle list. Are you ready for the hard copies? Yes, let’s hear it. OK, and some of these are actually soft copies. But, you know, physical books is what I mean. So I have on my desk. What would the Rockefellers do by Garrett Gunderson?
[04:31] It’s just out. I think maybe not even quite yet, but very soon will be. This is a good book. And I think even our name is listed in it maybe somewhere because we contributed to it a little bit. Willpower Doesn’t Work by Benjamin Hardy loved this book. I’ve got I’ve already read it. I read the physical copy. I’ve got probably 15 or so of the pages tabbed. I know some book people think that’s a sin, but I tab my pages for things that I want to go back to and reference and work on, etc. This is also a little sick, but I have the book called Life Insurance 10x. It is by the author. It’s not on the cover. This is not a book that’s available. I was sent this by the author, Laurence Ribka, R-Y-B-K-A, and it’s 298 pages.
[05:23] And I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Yes, I do like reading about life insurance. I realize, like I said, that’s a little weird, but I also have about 10 or 12 tabbed pages on it to go back and work on. The And Asset by Caleb Gilliams, which probably isn’t going to be out for another two or three, I’m thinking a month, let’s say. This is a prosperity economics advisor that has written a book, kind of fun. The book What Matters by Cam Thornton and Rod Zebe, a fabulous book. It’s a novel. It’s based in Oregon where I grew up, and it is a business owner’s Bible for how to live their life in the latter part of their business, which is just super cool. That’s what matters. And then I also have Heads I Win, Tales You Lose by Patrick Donahoe,
[06:19] who’s someone that you know, Spencer. And this is also a fairly recent book. And Patrick’s done a great job with it. It is a hard cover and, of course, includes some info about life insurance as well. So that’s what’s on my desk. Wow, what a list. Now, it’s kind of as far as our insights go, your physical copy and Kindle copy list is really large, whereas Todd, he likes to listen or watch more than he reads. So do you have any audiobooks or is it primarily just hard covers and Kindle? Oh, yeah, no audio for Kim. So this may interest people. I think it’s so critical that you figure out how you learn. And it took me a while, but I can read crazy fast. And consequently, I know that you can listen to podcasts and audiobooks
[07:10] at fast speed, but I truly think I read faster. At least I retain the information better. So I do not typically listen to podcasts. Now, I will if somebody asked me a specific one. And I absolutely do not do audiobooks at all. I much prefer to read. Wonderful way for our listeners to understand the way to read. Now, I’m going to go through and I’m going to say this. What is the next book that you’re going to write? Ah, well, I’ve already got it going. That’s so fun. So Busting the Real Estate Investing Lies will be out in probably a couple months. Then the one after that is probably about 80 percent done. And that’s going to be our family banking book. I’m not sure what the title is yet. We have kind of a working title.
[07:57] And then next on my list is Busting the Estate Planning Lies. And I’m actually going to hopefully start that in September. I have a co-author, and so it’ll depend on his schedule a little bit. But we’ve kind of identified September of 2018 as our starting point for that book. And that’s a good year out. So for us listeners, now that we understand Kim’s thinking a little bit more, we can do a couple of things. One, make sure that we subscribe to the podcast.
